Want that Job? 3 Easy Steps to Ace that Interview!

No, I am not a Human Resource guru, an industrial psychologist, a professional career strategist, or a personnel recruiter.  I am a business person who over the past 20 years has hired well over 1,000 people, counseled the careers of more than 100 persons of all ages, and coached the interviews of dozens with a perfect success record.  Impressed?  Don’t be.  I gave you this background only to illuminate the origin of my advice in the lines to come.

There are many things that you must do in preparing for the interview, and more things that you must do or avoid doing when you get there. So assuming that, I will not tell you that you must arrive 30 minutes ahead of time, turn off your smart phone, be dressed properly, know the company culture, know the background of your interviewer, etc, etc.  Common sense, right?  So here are 3 things to do to nail that job interview.

1. Anticipate and Practice. Do your homework, learn about the company and the interviewer, anticipate the questions that will likely be asked of you, carefully prepare and rehearse the answers, and deliver them in a self-confident and humble manner. Find somebody you trust and respect who has a good record in steadily advancing in his/her chosen field, and role-play.  If that person does not exist, use the mirror.  After you’ve done the drill a few times, you’ll know if you are good enough to hire you.  If you won’t hire yourself, nobody else will. Best go back to the drawing board and start anew.

2. Sell your Benefits Not your Features. Your prospective employer knows why you want the job and why getting the job will be good for you.  What you need to develop is a mindset which will allow you to craft answers that speak explicitly or implicitly to why hiring you is a good thing for the company, better known as a Win-Win Scenario. You may be asked “Why should I hire You?”  This is your time to sell yourself by selling your benefits, not your features. Your answer should not be “because I am a hard worker and I can do the job.”  It should be “because I work smartly and efficiently, and I am able to complete tasks on time and on budget, and therefore keep our clients happy,” or something along these lines. You see the difference? Answer the question in a way that explains or implies what tangible benefit your hiring will bring to your employer.

3. Close the Deal. Every interview is a sale, the most important sale for your career.  When the interview concludes, outwardly ask for the job.  Be direct, be forward, be humble and be serious.  The phrase that I counsel my people to use at the conclusion of every interview is this. “Based on what we’ve discussed, do you see any reason why I may not be the right person for this job?” and then bite your tongue and say nothing until they respond. Everyone I coached has gotten a “No” as the answer to this question, which is a “Yes” for the job.

Remember, do your homework, practice, ask questions, sell your benefits, and ask for the job.  And I bet you’ll get it.  It has worked for me and it will work for you.  You just have to try it!.
